Since 1865 people have stayed at Bealey, in the early days as a break during their 36-hour journey in a horse-drawn coach from Christchurch to Hokitika. Within a short time Bealey became the destination as people discovered its alpine attractions and benefits. Times have changed but what made Bealey irresistible is timeless.
In the South Island’s high country Bealey is conveniently located on SH73 the main road to the West Coast, 90 minutes inland from Christchurch and its international airport. On the sunny southern bank of the Waimakariri River surrounded by awe-inspiring views of snow capped mountains and bush clad valleys, this alpine oasis has been a destination for travellers and tourists for over 150 years – and it’s easy to see why.
